Why are we hesitant for career counselling?
In life, there are always two ways to arrive at a decision, one, hit & trial method and second, follow the correct (scientific) method meant for that decision. In general, you can't categorize them as correct or incorrect methods, whichever gives us the result, we treat that as correct but definitely probability of getting correct result is associated with correct (scientific) method more than traditional one.
Same is the case while we talk about career selection for our child.
Common mistakes we make while doing career selection using conventional or hit & trial method:
- Follow the crowd
- Parent’s pressure
- Too much worry about society
- Lack of information
- Stranger to yourself
This type of approach I will treat as more or less family tradition and I strongly criticize the approach. If you say this to any parents and try to make them understand the benefits of career counselling, they immediately will defend them saying, what's wrong in it? Even we did what my parents asked us and saw we were well off. But then why they adopted others things, why oven replaced chulha, why dishes replaced antenna, why people started travelling in own vehicle, why mobile when we can go and check about the well beings like we did in old times. Because, we understood the comfortability in adopting these new technologies.
Then,
- Why are we reluctant in adopting new scientific methods in making career selection for a child?
- Why do we want our child to get into engineering or medical or any traditional career when nowadays many new career options are available?
- Why do we want our child to follow the crowd when they could be capable enough to make his/ her own identity?
- Why don't we allow him/her to explore and select a career of their own choice?
Are our ignorance or prejudice behind it or some other reasons as well?
Or
Are we believer of "Ignorance is bliss"?
Time to think!!!!
And if you feel now that we should adopt a career more scientifically for a child's better tomorrow, your child is lucky to have parents like you.
